Right Out Of James Bond: Weaponized Car Opens Fire On Fugitive
IT WAS SCENE RIGHT OUT OF JAMES BOND: REMOTE-CONTROLLED GUN BARRELS rigged behind a car licence place blazed bullets at a Czech fugitive that someone wants dead.
Lucky for Radovan Krejcir, convicted last year in abstentia for tax fraud in his native Czechoslovakia, walked away unscathed; His bullet-proof Mercedes-Benz suffered some scuffs from the shots.
The shots were fired Wednesday from an empty car parked outside of Krejcir’s Bedfordview pawn shop. Then, the rigged car exploded and burned. The crime has riveted South Africans by what the Associated Press calls “one of the most outlandish chapters in the long saga of the underworld in Johannesburg, where turf battles over drugs, fraud schemes and other spoils sometimes turn deadly. “
The weaponized vehicle, a stolen red VW stolen red VW Polo, was adapted with a dozen gun barrels, the AP reports. “It was definitely very sophisticated,” marveled Sean Newman, a writer who was in the area at the time of the assault. “My first impression was that this was not local.”
“All my life is like James Bond stuff,” Krejcir bragged during an interview with a South African television news program. “That’s how I live my life.”
