Is It Curtains For Mr. Trololo?
NETIZENS ARE WEEPING TODAY: the viral “Mr. Trololo” has suffered a medical calamity.
Russian singer Eduard Khil, who became a YouTube sensation with his hilariously schmaltzy “non-lexical vocable” rendition of I Am Glad, ‘Cause I’m Finally Returning Back Home, has suffered irreversible brain damage following a stroke, RT reports.
Khil, 77, was already a popular singer in Russia when a 33-year-old video of his performance of him “tra la la-ing” and “ha ha ha-ing” his way through I Am Glad appeared on the web. The YouTube clip has generated 12,057,768 hits.
Khil’s 1976 performance is a spectacular synthesis of earnestness and schmaltz, making it perfect fodder for the playful Internet. The video’s popularity triggered renewed interest in Khil, who had had a successful singing career in Russia even though his son once said his father “thinks maybe someone is trying to make a fool of him….He keeps asking, ‘Where were all these journalists 40 years ago?'”
Doctors at the St. Petersburg Polenov Scientific Research Institute of Neurosurgery suggest that Khil’s life could be save with surgery. The family is asking the Russian government for extra funds for his treatment.Quick — someone tell them about Change.org?
