Dial M For Mystery: How Did A Choking Basset Hound Call For Help?
A BASSET HOUND NAMED GEORGE had a close call with death last week. The 2-year-old dog from West Yorkshire, England managed to get tangled up in a telephone cord and nearly choked to death.
Despite wearing a perpetually sad expression, George was not ready to exit this world and somehow managed to dial emergency services. The operator heard desperate breathing and alerted the authorities.
Four policemen arrived on the scene and ripped out the telephone wire to free the poor dog. No one has come up with a possible explanation as to how George managed to dial the number and owner Lydia Brown has admitted that he is not that clever. “We still don’t know how he managed it,” the dog’s owner Lydia Brown said. “…He’s not usually very smart. He’s really dopey and just likes to chew socks.”
Maybe the fact that the emergency service number in the UK is 999 and not 911 like the US had something to do with it. One good lean on that 9 must have done the trick.
Hopefully poor George’s dilemma has shown Ms. Brown that she needs to get with the times and update that phone. Maybe she will spring for Skype with video and if George finds himself tied up again; the operator will be able to talk him through it. Most dogs allowed to use the phone would probably dial out for pizza, but in George’s case maybe he will find out how to call a plastic surgeon for a neck lift. Glad to hear he is okay!
