NNEWS REPORTS HAVE IDENTIFIED as 20-year-old Adam Lanza as the shooter who entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Conn., shot administrators in the office and then moved to a classroom and opened fire, according to the Associated Press.
NBC had reported earlier that the shooter was Adam’s older brother, 24-year-old Ryan Lanza.
Twenty children were killed in the massacre, with another six adults and the shooter also killed.
“It’s a tragic scene,” Connecticut State Police Lt. J. Paul Vance said at a late afternoon press conference. There is a Facebook page belonging to a Ryan Lanza from Hoboken, New Jersey, and originally from Newton, Connecticut.
Reports say that authorities found Lanza’s father dead inside his home in New Jersey.
Lanza lists one of his “Likes” on Facebook as the game “Mass Effect,” described by Wikipedia as “a series of science fiction action role-playing third-person shooter video games.” It was developed by the Canadian company BioWare and released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Windows, according to Wikipedia.
Reporters at the scene say that there is confusion over whether Ryan Lanza was in fact the shooter or if it was his unidentified brother. Police reportedly had the brother of the shooter in custody for questioning but it remains unclear if that man in custody is Ryan or his brother.
“It’s the most traumatic event I have ever experienced,” said John Murphy, CEO of Danbury Hospital, at an afternoon press conference. “It is unthinkable. we’re all hurting here.”
He said the hospital was “fully ready to provide the care and we did.” He also expressed concern that witnesses of the crime get supportive psychological care.
