Should We Take Britney’s Advice & Keep On Dancing Till The World Ends?
By Elizabeth C.
THERE’S A COUPLE OF STORIES REGARDING SECRETS AND LIES THAT DESERVE YOUR ATTENTION THIS WEEK:
- A French study found that mice fed agri-giant Monsanto’s genetically modified Roundup Ready corn grew life-shortening tumors, causing me to lose my appetite for anything not organically grown. Some scientists and journalists criticize the research, but this isn’t the first study to conclude that genetically modified foods cause illness and disease. Why take the chance? “We are what we eat,” Mustafa Djamgoz, professor of Cancer Biology at Imperial College, London, tells the Daily Mail. “I work at the molecular level on cancer. There is evidence what we eat affects our genetic make-up and turns genes on and off. We are not scaremongering here. More research is warranted.” At the least we could do is require labeling on food.
- Our old friend Julian Assange is back in the news, pointing out President Obama’s hypocrisy on free speech. In a speech to the U.N. General Assembly Tuesday, Obama declared that “true democracy demands that citizens cannot be thrown in jail because of what they believe… depends on the freedom of citizens to speak their minds and assemble without fear.” Meanwhile, Assange withers inside London’s Ecuadorean Embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden and perhaps America, which has carried out an investigation “without precedent in its scale and nature” against Wikileaks. In a video feed to the United Nations General Assembly earlier today, Assange points out that the president’s attacks on the WikiLeaks’ founder and jailed U.S. soldier Bradley Manning have “done more to criminalize free speech than any other U.S. president.” His statement comes as an Australian newspaper reveals the U.S. identifies Assange as an “enemy of the state,” which conveniently would justify any U.S. prosecution or assault on the whistleblowing journalist.
The campaign against WikiLeaks is part of a larger problem: America’s increasing militarization of local police -and its hellbent plan on on labeling any critic of government policy makers as terrorists.
I guess we all have to choose whether to pay attention to the larger world, or just to go on dancing.
