Workplace Bullies Are Politically Skillful, Target The Unattractive

By Elizabeth Coady

RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU’VE EVER BEEN BULLIED ON THE JOB. There’s a lot of us out there, and two recent stories reveal new information about the behavior.

In an article titled, “Sometimes, the boss really is a psycho,” TODAY reports on a new study that reveals how politically savvy workplace bullies are. “The successful ones are very, very socially skilled,” said Darren Treadway, an associate professor at the University at Buffalo School of Management. “They’re capable of disguising their behavior.”

Treadway says that 84 percent of workers are impacted by workplace bullying — either victims themselves or witnesses to the practice. Previous researchers have found anecdotal evidence that bullying often goes unnoticed because bullies “understand their environments and select their targets strategically.”
