TO THE POLITICALLY OBSESSED, ONE LINE IN PRESIDENT OBAMA’S VICTORY SPEECH LIKELY STOOD out more than all the others uttered Tuesday night in Chicago.
In between the effusive thank yous and the conciliatory promises of compromise, Obama delivered glowing praise for Vice-President Joe Biden. “I want to thank my friend and partner of the last four years, America’s happy warrior, the best vice president anybody could ever hope for, Joe Biden.”
The message even came before Obama declared his love for his secret weapon, his wife of 20 years Michele. And I swear it sounded more like a pitch than a platitude. Seems Election Night 2012 isn’t too soon to begin jockeying for position in the next horse race.
A quick search confirms my suspicion: Biden himself hinted at a future presidential race in an exchange with a Wall Street Journal reporter Tuesday. When asked if he thought this election would be the last time he’d vote for himself, the VP grinned and answered, “No I don’t think so.”
If Biden runs, it would be his third stab at winning the presidency. And another roadblock to Hillary Clinton’s potential candidacy: I didn’t hear the President name her once in his victory speech.
