HE MOST PHOTOGRAPHED FACE OF FASHION doesn’t want you to see her for who she really is.
“I don’t want to be myself, ever,” Kate Moss tells Vanity Fair for its December cover story brokered to promote her imminently published coffee table book, Kate: The Kate Moss Book.
“I’m terrible at a snapshot. Terrible. I blink all the time. I’ve got facial Tourette’s. Unless I’m working and in that zone, I’m not very good at pictures, really.”
To hear her tell it, she even flipped out during her 2011 nuptials to musician Jamie Hince, commanding designer and close friend John Galliano to give “her a character.”
The designer directed: ”You have a secret — you are the last of the English roses. Hide under that veil.'” Then he made a crack about her face revealing her wanton past which includes a drug scandal and posing topless at the ripening age of 16.
“I see a 16-year-old now, and to ask her to take her clothes off would feel really weird,” Moss says of her “classic” shoot for The Face. “But they were like, If you don’t do it, then we’re not going to book you again. So I’d lock myself in the toilet and cry and then come out and do it.”
Moss, now 38, claims she also had a nervous breakdown following the Calvin Klein photo spread that catapulted her to fame.
“It didn’t feel like me at all,” she says. “I felt really bad about straddling this buff guy [Mark Walhbergf]. I didn’t like it. I couldn’t get out of bed for two weeks. I thought I was going to die.”
In the upcoming interview with VF, Moss says that “nobody takes care of you mentally.” But it was during her three-year relationship with Johnny Depp that she finally felt protected.
“There’s nobody that’s ever really been able to take care of me,”she mused. “Johnny did for a bit. I believed what he said,” Moss says… And that’s what I missed when I left. I really lost that gauge of somebody I could trust. Nightmare. Years and years of crying. Oh, the tears!”
Depp may remember things differently. “I don’t think I was very good for her,” the perennial fan favorite once said. “So what we did was right — we walked away from each other. She went on to bigger and better things, and I went on and fell in love and had kiddies.” The actor had two children with actress Vanessa Paradis before their relationship ended as well.
Now married with a daughter (from a previous relationship) and a dog, Moss says, at least on the face of it, her life looks settled. “But don’t burst the bubble. Behind closed doors, for sure I’m a hell-raiser.”
