WILL AND MONIFA SIMS WERE MINDING THEIR OWN BUSINESS, STOPPING TO FILL UP ON GAS, when the universe plucked them from obscurity to reward them with fame.
The couple — he a bartender, she a fitness instructor — were unwitting players in Jay Leno’s “Pump Gas News” — a skit whereby actor Tim Stack plays a news anchor who breaks the fourth wall to talk to gas station customers.
But on this particular episode, it’s Stack who gets the surprise of his life when the Sims put on an impromptu show worthy of national TV. Stack interjects on Will’s pumping by telling him he has a “really nice singing voice,” then offers to pay for a tank of gas for a song.
And for the next four minutes, Will and Monifa Sims deliver a joyful impromptu performance that is nothing short of life-affirming. At the end, Monifa announces, “Whoever you are you can make me a star! I’m ready for my spotlight!”
So Leno complied — and brought them onto his show. No doubt this joyful couple is the life of every party. Check it out.
UPDATE: THEY WERE BARTENDER AND FITNESS INSTRUCTOR. The Chicago Sun-Timesis reporting that the Sims are founding members of the Chicago’s Congo Square Theatre company, but that part of their story was left out deliberately. Producers “didn’t want [people] to think we were actors and it was a ‘plant’,” Will says. So, the actors happened to be in the right place at the right time. And who knows what’ll happen in the future? Says Monifa: “We are in Hollywood.”
