VISUALLY AND CONCEPTUALLY, THE NEWEST DR. PEPPER AD IS SPECTACULAR: IT ILLUSTRATES MAN EVOLVING FROM APE TO ERECT BIPEDAL HOMINID after discovering Dr. Pepper. The tagline reads: The evolution of flavor.
As one commenter on Reddit cleverly opined, “DR. PEPPER CLEARLY SHOWS INTELLIGENT DESIGN.”
But within minutes after the ad was posted on Dr. Pepper’s Facebook page, some creationists took offense at the company monkeying around with their beliefs.
“My ancestors were created in the Garden of Eden,” wrote Carmen Gregory Fortner. “I ain’t no freaking chimp. No more Dr Pepper for my household. God Bless y’all.” And Mary Macon added, “Love Dr Pepper but don’t like that you are implying we come from monkeys. I believe in God and the bible. God says He created us in his own image.”
That some people could be offended by an advertising campaign only trigger a tsunami of lols from those atheists, fans of science and people with senses of humor, some of whom just stirred the pot: Nicholas Williams (ironically?) wrote, “As a born again Christian, this highly upsets me. Please take this down and replace it with God creating Adam and Eve and giving them his greatest creation, Dr. Pepper. For on the seventh day, the lord created Dr. Pepper, and it was good. If this isn’t taken down I will be forced to remove Dr. Pepper and replace with the lesser drink of Pibb Xtra. Thank you.”
And Coby Stankiewicz chimed in, “This is sacrilege; Dr. Pepper was given to man by god himself, there was no ‘pre-pepper’. Heathens.”
One commenter summed up the faux controversy succinctly: “Creative ad! Don’t worry about all the people still in the “Pre-Pepper” stage — they often believe in strange magical people to explain things they don’t understand.”
But Mike Bullis summed it best: “This is all so ridiculous, why can’t a company just have a funny advertisement without it becoming a religious debate?”
Let’s hope he doesn’t get struck by lightning in the next 48 hours.
