TWO NEW YORK CHILDREN WERE STABBED TO DEATH THURSDAY, AND A BLOG ENTRY BELIEVED MADE BY THE CHILDREN’S MOTHER ONLY THREE HOURS EARLIER IS NOW A CRUEL REMINDER OF HOW LIFE’S SHOCKING REVERSALS CAN COME IN AN INSTANT.
Marina Krim returned to her Upper West Side apartment about 5 p.m. Thursday to discover two of her three children, identified as 6-year-old Lucia “Lulu” and 2-year-old Leo, stabbed in an apartment bathtub. They were declared dead later at St. Luke’s Hospital.
The children’s nanny, 50-year-old Yoselyn Ortega, lay on the floor with knife wounds to her neck and has been arrested for the stabbing deaths; she herself remains in critical condition.
“Leo speaks in the most adorable way possible. Firstly, he speaks super clearly, so you can understand every word is he is saying. And he does things like, “(I) want a fresh bagel” and “Dito (what he calls himself) wants cold milk” and most adorable of all, “No thank you” – he never uses “No” alone, it’s always paired with “thank you”.
The mother noted her mood as “amused.”
Less than four hours later, a neighbor reported to the Times that the distraught mother was nearly out of her mind in the lobby of their luxury building.
“She was screaming in a psychotic state,” the neighbor Rima Starr said. “She was not lucid.”
Another neighbor Sandy Marcus told the Wall Street Journal that Marina Krim “was clutching her [3-year-old] child and screaming—bloodcurdling screams in the lobby. There were swarms of police.”
By 10:30pm Thursday night, 55 comments of anguish and support, many from strangers, were left on the open blog post.
One of the most poignant messages read:
“I have tried for the past hour to write something meaningful. Hoping that if you read it, it would be able to give you a speck of comfort or a drop of strength. But there are no words. As a father, I can only pray for your family. I am truly truly sorry and saddened. “
